Victorian Ladies Capes

Ladies capes of the Victorian period had multiples uses. They kept the lady warm while hiding pregnancies when in public. In the early 1800s, ladies capes became more reserved for traditional and older women but by the later century they became popular. Both men and women wore capes for modesty, fashion and practical reasons such as keeping warm. Towards the middle of the Victorian period, ladies capes became shorter and detachable at the collar. They were great for snug comfort and retention of body heat during the winter season. Hooded coats became popular towards the end of the century. Capes came in all kinds of materials including chiffon, silk, lace, wool and crepe. Velvet was traditionally worn in the winter months.
