Here are some 1940s hairstyle examples.
victory rolls:
Named after a famous air maneuver during World war Two and also came to be named after an ally victory. Women would leave pin curlers or rollers in their hair overnight and would follow with minimal brushing in the morning. The curls were combed over with excess hair to keep the curling in place. Women could also invoke the classic method of hair rats or stuffing the hair with padding, usually paper, to carefully craft and mold the hair. This form of padding dates all the way back to the Edwardian era when hair volume and updos were also popular. Victory rolls can also be done by hand if you don’t have curling materials.

The pompadour would essentially be an updo which could include a collection of curls and rolls or a straight do crafted at the back of the head or piled high on top of the head. One would have to have long hair to accomplish a successful pompadour.
