1930s Suits

1930s suits for men were broad at the shoulders with the pants hanging loose. Despite the depression 1930s suits for men had flair and exuded confidence. Most suits were made of wool at that time. The average man could not get access to such suits and was mostly reserved for businessmen and gangsters. The three-piece suit became the standard of 1930s suits which included a vest, jacket and trousers. Vests closed around the top chest area, only making the top portion of the tie visible when fully buttoned. Jackets were tailored, usually fitted around the waist for a slimmer appearance along a broadening of the shoulders. There were no belts yet so the trousers were held in place by suspenders. This would change in the 1940s as more fabrics were needed for the war effort and pants would later become more fitted around the legs. It is a bit ironic that one of the worst financial decades of the twentieth century would produce such stylistic and high-class suits of luxury. It is a shame that suits did not follow this style in the coming decades.
